We’ve been married 7 years… it’s been so beautiful and wonderful, we’ve grown so much together & through so many different things. That first year, though it was full of new amazing things – us finding out what it truly meant to be united as one… and us reveling in our new sexual freedom as married lovers, I still tend to look back on that first year as being a little hard to adjust in some ways. We read some amazing books (I worked at a Christian bookstore with access to a great Marriage section), figured out how to better communicate, and were more prepared for the trials we would unknowingly face later down the road. Some things still hit us by surprise in the years to come, but overall, we tried really hard to make that first year memorable – in a good way!
If you’re getting married anytime soon, or already have and you’re in your first year – (or even your 2nd, 3rd, or 10th!!!) don’t underestimate the power of trying to have a beautiful, memorable marriage. I recently found my husband’s sweet note to me on our first anniversary, and it was great to read again what he thought of our first year together, it makes me so glad that we tried so hard for each other – to make it really great.
I want to encourage you to do the same!
Work towards a great marriage, start now… don’t wait until things get too in place, many marriage counselors think that the first 5 years (and the 1st in particular) are extremely crucial to setting correct patterns of communication, healthy interaction & problem solving.
Here is the sweet, tear-jerker note I found tucked into the back of my Bible:
I love you sweet heart… I love spending time with you… and just getting to hold you every night is so wonderful. Thank you for baking me a cake for no special reason except for how much you love me. You are the one thing that gets me through all my tough days at work. Thank you for being an amazing wife, I could not ask for a better one, God has really been blessing us and will continue because of our love and respect for Him. You are my one true friend, and I love you so much. Thank you for everything you have done in our first year of marriage, you have made it so much better than I ever thought it would be, and you are the reason I have the faith I have now.
Thank you for loving me with all your heart, you are my soul mate, and I will love you till the end of time and beyond. I love you my beautiful sweet pea, with all my love… and more than you’ll ever know.
